The sharing of food is central to Christian faith and practice. It is present in the sacrament of the eucharist; it is a means for experiencing fellowship; and it is a critical practice of hospitality to the poor. Throughout the centuries Christians have thought carefully about food and faith, engaging in both feasts and fasting as a means of being mindful of God.
In the present many congregations are developing intentional practices with respect to food (e.g., community gardens, vegetarian meals, support for local farmers) that are part of a theology of creation care. In this webinar, Dr. Carol A. Newsom, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Old Testament and director of the graduate division of religion, and Dr. Jennifer R. Ayres, assistant professor of religious education and director of the Religious Education program will explore aspects of the biblical and theological basis for mindful eating.
