All are invited to a conversation with Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, (Eastern Pennsylvania conference of the UMC) about deaf ministry and the deaf church. Deaf ministry remains on the far margins of ministry for the vast majority of Christian churches.

Prior to her election, Bishop Johnson served in a number of appointments in the Baltimore-Washington conference, but most significantly for this gathering, as campus minister for Gallaudet University (a leader in higher education for deaf persons located in Washington, DC), and as the pastor of the historic Christ UMC of the Deaf in Baltimore, where she served for 20 years. She earned her M.Div from Asbury Theological Seminary and her D.Min. from Wesley Theological Seminary and taught deaf and disability courses at Wesley on a regular basis as adjunct faculty. In addition, Bishop Johnson co-pastored a four point charge with her husband, Mike, and as pastor of Lansdowne UMC, prior to her leadership with the deaf church.

Bishop Johnson believes in the inclusion of persons with disabilities, “...not just to welcome them, but to be co-ministers in the priesthood of all believers...without them we’re not fully complete; we need their gifts for being the fully functional Body of Christ.”
