Pitts Theological Library, 505 Kilgo Circle, Pat Graham Office, Atlanta, GA 30322
Thursday, September 26, 2013, 5:30 – 7pm

Prospective students are invited to dinner in Pitts Theology Library at 5:30 p.m., just before the lecture of Barbara Brown Taylor, this year’s Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on the Life and Teachings of Jesus and their impact on Culture.  At dinner we will discuss opportunities for study and growth at Candler with members of the Admissions team, including a few of our Student Ambassadors.  And, you will have a reserved seat for the lecture!

Barbara Brown Taylor is the Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in rural northeast Georgia. An Episcopal priest since 1984, she is the author of twelve books, including the New York Times bestseller An Altar in the World. Her first memoir, Leaving Church, met with widespread critical acclaim, winning a 2006 Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association. Rev. Taylor will speak on “Learning to  Walk in the Dark.” Her address stems from the well-established human fear of the dark and “darkness” as a synonym for everywhere we don’t want to go!  Yet, we are called to keep moving even when we cannot see the way ahead. In spite of everything we've been taught, learning to walk in the dark puts us on the sacred way of unknowing, where there are fewer obstacles to encountering the God we did not make up. This path opens the possibility that walking in the dark nourishes the soul as surely as walking by the light of day.

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at Glenn Memorial Auditorium on Emory's campus and is free and open to the public.
