The lecture topic will be given by Bishop Melvin G. Talbert, United Methodist bishop and justice activist. Bishop Talbert has been deeply involved in activism for social justice since his days as a student at the Interdenominational Theological Center (Gammon) in the early 1960s.
He served as the general secretary of the General Board of Discipleship, President of the National Council of Churches, USA, and was elected a bishop in 1980 by the United Methodist Western Jurisdiction. Deeply committed to racial, gender, and sexual orientation inclusiveness, Bishop Talbert believes "there is room at God's Table for everyone". Most recently Bishop Talbert is known for having officiated at the wedding of Joe Openshaw and Bobby Prince in Birmingham, Alabama.
