Emory University, May 6-8, 2012
"Jews, Military Service, and Collective Belonging: From Antiquity to the Present" is a conference exploring one of the most promising subjects of interdisciplinary study, the relationship between military service and belonging. By appealing to a history of wartime sacrifice, minority groups including ethnic groups and women can affirm their membership in the collectivity.
This conference investigates the subject from the perspective of Jewish communities. It treats three millennia of history, from the first attestations in the Neo-Assyrian and Achaemenid Empires to the modern nation-state.
Hosts: Jacob L. Wright
Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible, Emory University
Derek Penslar
Samuel Zacks Professor of Jewish History, University of Toronto (now Oxford University)
