For National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11), Sacred Worth will have a PostSecret campaign. We are asking Candler people to write an anonymous secret on the back of a postcard (located near bright pink boxes found throughout Candler and Cannon Chapel). On National Coming Out Day the postcards will be displayed so that the whole community can read what people have chosen to share.
We chose this campaign for National Coming Out Day because many LGBTQ people experience their identity as a shameful secret that can be terrifying to keep. That secret, however, only has power as long as it is kept secret, and the act of sharing with a community (coming out) can be a liberating and relieving event. Our hope is that a secret-sharing campaign will create solidarity between straight and LGBTQ folk by creating a space for the common experience of sharing something deeply personal with others.
